Why is CNN falling for Fox's bait?

FOX is up to its old race-baiting tricks. But this time, CNN is repeating FOX’s distortions and taking them mainstream.

FOX is claiming that under President Obama, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is refusing to prosecute voting rights offenses when the victims are White and the perpetrators are Black. It’s a bogus story based on the allegations of one former Republican DOJ attorney, and it sidesteps a mountain of facts.

On Tuesday, FOX complained that other news outlets weren’t covering the story. The next day, CNN uncritically echoed FOX’s distorted story, lending it mainstream credibility. We expect FOX to engage in this kind of race-baiting. But CNN should know better, and we need to hold them publicly accountable.

The story that FOX is pushing revolves around an incident on election day 2008 in which several men from a small, fringe organization called the New Black Panther Party (NBPP — no relationship to the original Black Panther Party) stood in front of a polling place in a majority Black voting district, one of them carrying a nightstick. The Bush Justice Department charged them with civil voter intimidation charges, after deciding that the case didn’t meet the bar for criminal charges.

After Obama took office, the Department of Justice dropped most of the remaining charges, saying that they weren’t supported by the facts and the law, while obtaining an injunction against the man who had been carrying a nightstick.

But in FOX’s hands, the story has become that the case was dropped because of anti-White policies in the Obama administration, with Andrew Breitbart and host David Asman effectively calling the President a racist. CNN’s willingness to follow FOX’s lead is inexcusable.

The New Black Panther story is built on the claims of one man — J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department official who claims that the Obama administration dropped the NBPP case because of race.[6] But even the most basic digging reveals that Adams is nothing more than a conservative activist hired by a Bush administration that was hell-bent on politicizing the Justice Department and subverting its civil rights enforcement mission. During the Bush years — the bulk of Adams’ tenure at the DOJ — civil rights enforcement decreased. The DOJ failed to even investigate numerous clear civil rights violations when the victims were Black and Latino, especially allegations involving voting rights.

CNN has repeatedly allowed Adams to air his twisted views without allowing opposing perspectives or telling the full story of Adams’ past. CNN calls itself "the most trusted name in news," but they just became complicit in a right wing effort to smear President Obama and Attorney General Holder as racists.

The fact is that there’s simply no evidence to support Adams’ claims. No "victims" — White or otherwise — have stepped forward to say that they were intimidated on the day in question.

Even Abigail Thernstrom, GOP-appointed vice chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, which is now investigating the situation, blasted Adams, his theory, and the path it’s forced the commission to pursue. She sees it as an embarrassment. Thernstrom said, "I know Chris Adams very well, and he doesn’t know why the decision was made." She goes on to call the DOJ’s position "perfectly plausible" and concludes "I don’t think that this inquiry has served the interests of the Commission as being a bipartisan watchdog for important civil rights violations, and I do not believe it has served well the party to which I belong."

Will conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart reveal the source of the edited tape that smeared Shirley Sherrod?

{Snippets of that speech — a heavily edited version — were released by a conservative blogger, Andrew Breitbart, made their way through the Internet and were played by Fox News Channel on Monday, which used them in the context of reporting about the N.A.A.C.P. last week accusing parts of the Tea Party movement of being racist. }

Do you agree with this woman that FOX and the Tea Party are scaring the Obama Administration?

An employee of the USDA resigned after conservative media activist Andrew Breitbart posted a recent video of her speaking and Fox News picked it up. She told CNN that she tried to explain to USDA officials that the incident was in the past, but said "for some reason, the stuff Fox and the Tea Party does is scaring the Administration."

In the video she says 24 years ago she didn’t use the "full force" of her abilities to help a farmer avoid foreclosure because he was white. She was torn over helping him because so many black farmers were also struggling. She was working for a nonprofit, not the USDA and told the story on the video to illustrate how she has since realized that everything is not about race but "about those who have versus those who do not have." She says she later became friends with the farmer and his wife.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said "There is zero tolerance for discrimination at USDA. We have been working hard through the past 18 months to reverse the checkered civil rights history at the department and take the issue of fairness and equality very seriously. Sherrod told CNN "This was 24 years ago, and I’m telling a story to try to unite people."

I need other opinions on this. Is this woman correct in saying the Administration is caving into pressure from conservative groups? She admits to making a mistake and is even friends with the farmer and his wife and yet the Secretary of Agriculture who’s been working hard for a whole whopping 18 months to reverse the checkered civil rights history at the department fires this woman for saying in a video that she made a decision in the past based on race and it was wrong.

Do you feel that the Tea Party may be involved in using this video to deflect attention from the racism charges they’re getting by the NAACP and other groups? She’s the only one that mentions the Tea Party specifically so I honestly don’t know if they are actually involved in this or not. Thanks for all opinions.
She wasn’t fired, she resigned. Sorry about that.

What do you think will happen if ACORN files a lawsuit against Fox News?

Let’s say this sting operation in which ACORN employees are caught advising how to falsify tax forms and set up a child prostitution ring was illegal….and that the video can’t be considered evidence.

Well, doesn’t the fact that we KNOW it happened mean ACORN should be fully investigated just to be sure they aren’t doing more crap like this?? Didn’t they get BILLIONS of dollars from the stimulus?? And weren’t they slated to be involved with Census 2010 (until 3 days ago)??

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/12/us/politics/12acorn.html

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27139.html

ACORN is alleging that the filmmakers committed a felony by shooting the footage of ACORN employees in the act of providing advice on how to falsify tax forms and set-up a child prostitution business—to a man and a woman posing as a pimp and a prostitute.

A lawyer for ACORN said Monday that statutes in Maryland and the District of Columbia made the undercover filming illegal and that the same laws should prohibit the rebroadcast of the tapes by the Web site BigGovernment.com, where they were first posted last week, and on Fox News, which aired clips of the videos.

BigGovernment.com, which launched last Wednesday, is a project of Andrew Breitbart, the founder of Breitbart.com. The videos show James O’Keefe, a conservative activist, and Hannah Giles, who is listed as a contributor on the right-leaning website, TownHall.com, visiting ACORN offices in Baltimore and Brooklyn and an ACORN Housing Corporation branch in Washington, D.C.

“It is clear that the videos are doctored, edited, and in no way the result of the fabricated story being portrayed by conservative activist ‘filmmaker’ O’Keefe and his partner in crime,’ ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis said in a statement over the weekend. “And, in fact, Wire Transfer Wisconsin Community Bank a crime it was—our lawyers believe a felony—and we will be taking legal action against Fox and their co-conspirators.”

Is ACORN's nemesis Andrew Breitbart the new Don Hewitt (60 Minutes)?

As the once super potent major news shows and newspapers become Dodos, new sources arise.

Fox uses citizen investigative journalism, and the main source of FOXNEWS for the recent street prostitute underage sex-slave sponsoring pervasive criminality expose of ACORN (Obama’s favorite community organizing organization with whom he has many ties) has been Andrew Brietbart.
