These black hat techniques, at best are an annoyance and worst can cause people their lively hood. So why write about them at all, I guess I am like Amsterdam on this, that means if you raise enough awareness about it you may identify it and help correct it fairly quickly.

What do I mean by Negative SEO?

This is not a straight forward question at least to my intelligence. I don't consider DDOS attacks to be negative seo, but to me it is an illegal practise. Manipulating competitors rankings, I would consider that negative seo (still illegal...ish) When we talk about malware injection etc. I am undecided and think its better to know this exists then to be oblivious to it.

When is Negative SEO most beneficial?

Negative SEO works the best on brand new sites (less than 1.5 years old), generally after a year the sites with a decent link profile are a bit more impervious to negative seo attacks.

Negative SEO is also specifically effective on sites with data feeds. This is especially true in recent months, web sites which allow their data feeds to be indexed are in particular at risk, as are sites with substantial duplicate content (my guess would be anything greater than 20% dupe content and a negative SEO attack can bring you down)

In my opinion my above statement has a common factor, trust. New sites are not weighted as heavily as old one we all know that, it is also common knowledge as to Google not really being a fan of duplicate content (which I also think has several levels). In case a site already has those signals, then its easier to exploit them.

If I have a new site or buy a new domain name 60% of the time I will buy it and put up three pages of content with correct site architecture and then let it stay there and grow up for over 1.5 years (if its a.com I will always buy more than three years of registration), of course during that time I will do little or no seo, and have it gradually getting links say around a 100 a month.

If its a site that I have high expectations for then I will make sure I have trusted links pointed at them to ensure they will have subsequent authority in 1.5 years time to sit down and work on them. On the flip side what If I see a new competitor moving into my market?

The action taken will depend entirely on a number of factors such as:-

How serious am I about that sector?

What sort of resources does the new site have? (this can be a bit tricky but worthwhile spending time and money to find out)

What stage of the build process are actually my sites at?

Are my sites sufficiently protected? (do they have enough trust, to withstand a negative attack?)

What kind of resources can I dedicate to protecting either defensively of offensively my assets?

An Effective Attack

An effective negative SEO attack will result in a competitor site loosing rankings, a good SEO attack will never be aimed at the home page. A targeted landing page which is well connected to the rest of the website is usually enough. If resources demand it then multiple pages can be targeted simultaneously. Depending on the goal at hand few 301 redirects can also be implemented.
